

OpenSplat, which brought Mac training to 3DGS has received a big update, now allowing users to train with MPS backend with GPU acceleration. While it took me roughly 15 minutes to train to 2,000 steps when it first released, it is now taking me ~3 minutes on my M2 laptop.
The process itself is not without it’s hitches. With the fast training time, there is currently a memory leaking issue, whereby it’s consuming large amounts of memory. For me, it’s about 30GB running in my Activity Monitor, once approaching 7K steps. However, this appears to be well in the works of being worked on and should be coming in a future update.
If you’re looking for where your PLY will appear once it’s finished training, it will be stored in the build folder of OpenSplat. Make sure you either rename it or move it prior to starting another job.
The software engineer that created the pull request, Andrew Chan, has added an interactive demo from his training results for people to try out!
